Wix or WordPress

SEO is an essential factor to drive traffic to your website and rank higher in search engines like Google. The basic difference between Wix or WordPress is their technical process. Both WordPress and Wix have the potential to build websites.

Wix is an easy website builder with flexible designs, where no technical knowledge is required to handle. You cannot build large websites as it tends to become slow with too many pages. Whereas WordPress allows you to make large websites but one must have good technical knowledge in order to operate it.

Now, let us see the difference of SEO features for both the platforms and see which platform performs better from an SEO perspective.

What is SEO

What is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. It is the process of increasing quality traffic to your website through organic search engine results.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is an open source content management system(CMS) and is the most popular and easiest way to create your own website or blog.  A content management system is a tool where you can easily manage the important features of your website like content without requiring to know much about programming.

What is Wix?

Wix is one of the easiest website builders to create a website and has become the most popular website design tools at present. It has millions of users who use this software to create websites and do marketing using Wix’s platform.

You don’t require any technical knowledge of coding or HTML in order to create a website in Wix. A website can easily be created in Wix in no time. Wix comes with simple drag and drop features along with templates where you can  create and customize your own website.

Wix has been active in trying to optimize its platform to have a better SEO infrastructure but still has a long way to go. Though it allows non-coders to create web pages easily, if you right-click and view the source, you will see some random code, which makes it hard for Google and other search engines to read. But with strong backlinks and good content, you can still rank a Wix website in Google, but it’s a bit harder. Wix has initiated the Wix SEO Wiz recently that can help in choosing keywords, and make a personalized SEO plan.

SEO essential - Wix or WordPress

The Wix SEO Wiz gives you a list of SEO essential tasks to optimize your Wix website better. It will till you if your:

  • Site is mobile friendly
  • Homepage has an SEO title
  • Homepage has an SEO description
  • Homepage is indexable
  • Homepage has keyword-rich content

Though SEO Wiz is a good addition to the platform, it’s not going to work much for your overall SEO.

  • It has built-in SEO tools
  • Combines with Google

  • It has no customization
  • It does not have enough scalability
  • You have to use Wix’s servers

SEO for WordPress

WordPress has one of the best SEO bases of any content management system. It has been available for quite a long time and is an open source platform. It is fully optimized for SEO with the newest techniques.

The selection of themes is important when it comes to on-page SEO with WordPress. You can fully improve your WordPress website with few plugins.

For WordPress sites, Yoast SEO is the best plugin. You can do most of the things that you require to do for a fully optimized website that includes:

  • Meta title
  • Meta description
  • XML sitemap
  • Schema tags
  • Canonical URLs
  • Alt Tags
  • Deep Linking

Wix has its servers, but if you use WordPress, you will need to host it on a server. This is a good thing because you can take control of your server and get a fast WordPress server rather than only being able to use Wix’s servers which can get slower with higher trafficked sites.

  • Has a feature of rich plugins
  • Choice of servers
  • SEO Optimized themes
  • Open-Source

  • It can get slow with many posts

Wix & its technical SEO features

The link structure that Wix platform uses is peculiar. You will see a # in every single Wix.com site URL, which is being served through javascript, which in turn becomes tough for the search engines to read. Thus it becomes difficult for Google to crawl Wix sites. Wix also needs improvement in sitemap creation. Sitemap tells the search engine how your site is structured to make the website pages index easily. Wix do have this feature, but you will have to use Google Search Console to manage your sitemap.

Google Search Console

Another big downfall of Wix is that the custom code cannot be added nor can you edit the current ones. Though Wix has the HTML code element, it is limited for more advanced users. Wix sites load slower than WordPress sites making them insignificant from an SEO perspective. With Wix, you can make attractive sites, but when it comes to SEO, unluckily there are some major problems.

Difference between Wix or WordPress SEO:

There are two types of SEO: Off-page and On-page SEO . When it comes to on-page activities, it is the same for both WordPress and Wix. WordPress and Wix have the following similar On-page activities:

  • It can change the page title, meta description & H1 – H6 tags
  • Creation of sitemap for easy and fast crawling
  • Add alt tags to images
  • Friendly and short URLs
  • Mobile friendly
  • Connection to Google Analytics, Google Search Console, etc.

WordPress, undoubtedly is the better content management system SEO-wise. It has broad plugins that allow you to perform any optimization required to have a complete optimized website.

WordPress also allows you to select your server whereas Wix has its servers. A Wix site will become very slow with huge traffic. Lastly, WordPress allows users to customize files, ages, and HTML to stick to the newest SEO trends. WordPress is the best choice if you are looking for a powerful CMS with a strong SEO foundation.
